How Can You Permanently Relieve Your Jaw Pain Without Surgery?

Jaw pain that won't go away? Try one of these non-surgical options.

Do you have jaw pain that won’t go away? Have you been told the cause may be TMJ/TMD?

Some people think surgery is the only way to gain permanent relief. Would you be glad to know there are non-surgical options that can help put an end to your pain?

At Distinctive Dental Care, we focus on effective, non-invasive treatment for our patients. Find out what these treatments are and how they can help you end your pain.

What is TMJ/TMD?

TMJ is the temporomandibular joint found on each side of the jaw that attaches your jaw to your skull. It’s what lets you speak, chew, and smile.

TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder) is when those joints become damaged or misaligned, which often causes pain and discomfort.

Some of those distressing symptoms include:

  • Chronic headaches
  • Jaw clicking or popping
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Pain in the jaw, neck, or shoulders
  • Jaw locking in place

Millions of Americans suffer daily from the painful effects of TMD. It can become debilitating and affect the quality of your daily life.

The good news:

There are effective, non-surgical TMD treatments to help get you back to enjoying a pain-free life again.

What non-surgical solutions can treat TMD?

After a thorough examination, our Prescott dentists can determine if TMD is the cause behind your painful symptoms. They may recommend one of three non-invasive solutions: restorative dental work, a splint or nightguard, or MLS laser treatment.

Let’s look a little closer at each of these:

Restorative dental work

A jaw can become misaligned because of missing or crooked teeth. The upper and lower jaws can’t line up correctly for proper function, causing pressure on the temporomandibular joints, leading to discomfort.

The solution, in this case, is restorative dentistry. Replacing a missing tooth with a bridge, denture, dental implant crown, or straightening the teeth will restore your smile and jaws to healthy alignment, ending your discomfort.

Splint/mouthguard

Jaw pain and headaches can also be caused by clenching the jaw or grinding the teeth, causing pressure and stress on the TMJ and the jaw muscles.

There is an easy, non-invasive solution to this:

We can create a custom-created mouthguard or splint to fit over the teeth, protecting them from clenching and grinding.

In most cases, you only need to wear the mouthguard at night while you sleep for it to be effective.

MLS laser treatment

MLS (multi-wave locked system) Laser Therapy is the use of specific wavelengths of light to treat painful and debilitating conditions.

The treatments are painless and last for just minutes. The effects of the therapy are cumulative, and many people experience relief in only 1 to 3 treatments. The normal course of treatment is 7 to 10 sessions.

Benefits of laser therapy:

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • No negative side effects
  • Analgesic
  • Accelerated tissue repair
